Meta will end Quest 2 OS updates in 2027

If you play VR with a friend who owns a Quest 3, you can keep your Quest 2 in the rotation. Meta’s final feature update for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro is due on all devices by March 2027. That date changes which features the headsets will get, not whether you can meet up in a game you both own.

Three deadlines, three different consequences

In its November 2 announcement for developers, Meta set out separate timelines for the operating system, security fixes and new games. Here’s what each means for owners.

Quest 2 and Quest Pro: Meta’s 2027 support schedule
When What changes
January–March 2027 Horizon OS 2.13 rolls out. Later OS features are reserved for Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer hardware.
Through the end of 2027 Meta will continue quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes for both older headsets.
Through December 2027 Developers can still submit new titles for Quest 2 and Pro. After that window closes, they can still update existing titles.

What happens to your games and multiplayer?

The store stays open. You retain access to your purchases, and you can still buy and download compatible games. Cross-play with Quest 3 and 3S remains available in titles that support it. Meta also says PC VR through Link will continue to work.

The distinction worth watching is who supports what. Meta can keep cross-play available at the platform level, but individual studios decide whether to maintain their older headset versions. UploadVR notes that developers must give at least 180 days’ notice if ending device support would cut players off from content or essential services. For a game you play every Friday, the studio’s own notices matter more than the month of the last OS update.

Real Talk

Keeping a Quest 2 and buying one secondhand are now quite different decisions. If yours works and the games you enjoy still run, replacing it buys you nothing for your next session. If you’re shopping for your first headset, though, a low used price only makes sense if the games you want are already available for it.

Before buying, pick the three games you most want to play and check their store listings for supported headsets. If one of them is an upcoming release, look for an explicit Quest 2 or Quest Pro announcement. A store that stays open is useful for exploring its catalogue; it tells you little about where next year’s releases will land.

💡 IskraCore Take

Keep the headset if it still does your job, whether that’s PC VR through Link or a regular multiplayer night. Consider an upgrade when you can name the game or feature you’re missing. For a new buyer who wants to follow upcoming standalone releases, we’d start with Quest 3S or Quest 3: those are the devices Meta is asking developers to build for.
