With Valheim 1.0 scheduled for September 9, 2026, that attachment becomes a practical decision. Iron Gate is bringing the Deep North and adding PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 to the platform lineup, with crossplay announced across platforms.
Our recommendation: keep a world you still enjoy playing in. Start fresh if rediscovering the journey with friends is the main attraction. Before deciding, understand one important limitation.
Does Valheim 1.0 require a new world?
No. Iron Gate’s official 1.0 FAQ says existing saves remain playable, but proper generation of new biome content depends on areas being unexplored. An old save surviving the update does not mean every part of its terrain will be rebuilt.
The studio also recommends a fresh playthrough for the best experience. That recommendation deserves attention, but it leaves room for a perfectly reasonable alternative: continuing an adventure you have no desire to abandon.

For builders, the world itself may be the reward. A settlement can represent shared decisions, ridiculous detours and a surprising amount of negotiation over where the stairs should go. That history has value even when a new map offers a cleaner beginning.
We would avoid deleting anything just to make the decision feel final. Preserve your original saves and check your backup options before making changes. Give yourself room to try a different direction without turning a gaming evening into a recovery project.
When a fresh start is worth the effort
A restart is easiest to justify when the group is changing. An experienced player may see an established base as convenience; a newcomer may see a place where every interesting decision has already been made.
Starting together gives everyone a stake in the expedition. You can agree on the pace, decide how much guidance newcomers want and avoid making the first evening a guided tour of someone else’s achievements.
There is also a useful test for returning players: does rebuilding sound exciting, or does it sound like homework? If the answer is homework, do not commit the whole group to a restart because it looks like the most enthusiastic response to a launch.
